Occupations, Inc. is one of Orange County’s largest not-for-profit human services agencies, providing a broad array of services, information and referrals to over 14,000 people annually and has recently extended services in Dutchess, Greene, Westchester, Ulster and Putnam counties.
Service Access Center
Occupations, Inc.’s services can be accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through one toll-free call to the Service Access Center at 1-888-750-2266.
Mobile Mental Health Team. Professional, clinician-staffed telephone support and outreach intervention is available to anyone in Orange County in need of emotional support or crisis intervention in the home, at school or in the community. Specific services provided to System of Care youth, Orange Community College and families and developmentally disabled individuals residing in their homes. Follow-up service planning ensures that individual needs are met. Trained therapists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling 1-888-750-2266.
Clinical Services
Community Counseling and Family Counseling Centers. Individual, family therapy and group counseling for children, adolescents, adults and families is available at three locations throughout Orange County (Newburgh, Goshen, and Middletown). Teams of experienced psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, social workers, psychiatric nurses, child psychiatrists and other psychotherapists assist children and adults in coping with emotional problems and mental illness. Medications and psychopharmacology are also available as treatment options.
Continuing Day Treatment (CDT) and Intensive Outpatient Programs. Continuing Day Treatment and Intensive Outpatient programs assist adults with mental illness in achieving psychiatric stability while living productively in the community. Experienced clinical staff and psychiatrists provide a full range of treatment and rehabilitation options daily at Occupations, Inc.'s New Windsor site, including group and individual counseling, substance abuse services, medication therapy and assistance with life skills, personal goal setting and planning.
Partial Hospitalization. As a positive alternative to psychiatric hospitalization, or to divert admission or substantially reduce the length of a hospital stay, Occupations, Inc. offers Partial Hospitalization at the Union St. Center in Middletown – an intensive, psychotherapeutic treatment experience designed to stabilize acute symptoms of mental illness. More intensive than conventional outpatient treatment, Partial Hospitalization allows for a flexible combination of individual and group psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology to meet the needs of individuals in many stages of recovery. Services and transportation available to anyone residing in Orange County.
Home and Community Based Services Waiver Program. The Waiver Program is an intensive clinical and support service designed for families who have a child with a serious mental illness who is at risk of long-term placement or psychiatric hospitalization. To qualify for the service, both the child and the family must meet certain eligibility requirements and be committed to maintaining the child in the home environment.
Community Outreach Services
Personalized Recovery-Oriented Services (PROS), located at Union Center, provides an array of rehabilitation and recovery services to adults with a mental illness. Community Rehabilitation and Support is the core component of the PROS program and includes services to assist individuals in acquiring and maintaining skills and supports to live successfully in their communities. These include wellness self-management, benefits and financial management, leisure planning and skill development to manage symptoms and practice life skills. The PROS program offers Intensive Rehabilitation services to assist individuals in obtaining specific life roles, reduce risk of relapse, hospitalization, loss of housing, or involvement with the criminal justice system. For individuals employed in the competitive workplace, Ongoing Rehabilitation Services are available to provide ongoing support and to assist in the management of their mental health symptoms. Clinical services are available to individuals for medication management as well as group and individual therapy. The PROS team is composed of dedicated, experienced and trained professionals who embrace the principles of rehabilitation and recovery.
Case Management. Case management services support people with serious mental illnesses in living as productive members of the community. Case managers provide advocacy, monitoring, referral/linkage, support and case coordination services. Intensive Case Managers maintain a smaller caseload of at-risk individuals with more intensive need for contact. Case Management services also include a youth case manager, transitional case management services for those transitioning from jail, prison or an inpatient psychiatric setting, assistance with DSS contracted benefit(s), and peer recovery case management.
Residential Opportunities. Occupations, Inc. offers community residence and supportive and supported apartment placement to people with mental illness and developmental disabilities. Community residences in Middletown, Newburgh, Monroe and elsewhere throughout Orange County, Ulster County and Greene County are staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by counselors available to assist individuals in learning the skills necessary to live more independently. People in a supportive apartment setting receive counseling and support on a regular basis to enhance and refine community living skills.
Transportation. Occupations, Inc. maintains its own transportation system that covers all of Orange County. With its 171-vehicle fleet of vans, buses and cars, Occupations, Inc. assists over 400 people daily in traveling to its various service centers, as well as to community jobs and recreational opportunities. The department offers transportation to workers on its contracted services, such as the DOT rest areas along Interstate 84 and janitorial services at county government sites. Occupations, Inc. has been the recipient of Federal Transit Administrative grants through the Section 5310 and Section 5317 Grant Programs. In addition, a generous grant was awarded by Key Bank to assist in the agency’s transportation needs.
Foster Care Services
Occupations, Inc. provides services for foster care youth throughout Orange County. We provide services for 10 boys and 10 girls in two separate group homes. The group homes provide weekly therapy, family therapy, and independent living skills. The group home setting allows the youth to be active members of a community while striving to reach their goals of returning to their families or being able to live independently while working or continuing their education. Age range 12-21 years.
Assessment Center provides diagnostic assessments for Department of Social Services’ and Family Courts throughout the region. This setting serves youth ages 10-21 who are in need of temporary placements and evaluation. The Assessment Center can also provide "in-home" assessments for Orange County youth who are deemed eligible for this service by the Department of Social Services or Family Court.
Medicaid Service Coordination Assistance
Medicaid Service Coordination (MSC) assists Individuals with developmental disabilities with case/service coordination, advocacy, linkage and referral and oversight of vital services. MSC will ensure each individual receives the supports and services necessary to achieve their ultimate goals. MSC will provide guidance and coordination of services in collaboration with families, other natural supports and service providers to ensure each individual attains optimal health while becoming productive members of their community. Occupations Inc. MSCs are committed to partnering with each individual and their supports to ensure they are able to live the highest quality of life.
Child Welfare Services
Child welfare services. Available throughout Orange County and Sullivan County clinical casework service for families with children at risk of child abuse, neglect, placement in foster care or returning from residential treatment either to their families or to independent living through our new Transitional Support Service. Preventive caseworkers, family support therapists/counselors and family development specialists are available for home visits throughout Orange and Sullivan Counties to support families in strengthening skills and creating positive parent-child relations.
Healthy Families. Based on a model from Prevent Child Abuse America, the Healthy Families is a cooperative home visiting program in the 12550 and 10940 zip codes to screen all pregnant women and new parents for risk factors. Family Assessment Workers and Healthy Families Family Support Workers give parents information and support to promote positive parenting skills, maximize child development, reduce life stresses and increase use of preventive health care. Participation begins during pregnancy or until the baby is three months old. Services may continue until the child begins Head Start or school. Participation in this program is voluntary and funded through the NYS Office of Children and Family Services. There is no fee to participants. Bilingual services are available. In addition, Occupations, Inc. is able to offer this same service to pregnant youth in the Middletown school district through a SAMSA grant in which Occupations, Inc., is a lead provider.
Rehabilitation Services
Day Habilitation. The Occupations day habilitation serves adults with developmental disabilities who desire a highly individualized and structured habilitation service to support their personal desires, needs and life goals. The day habilitation program focuses on the importance of building community connections and provides many habilitation and therapeutic activities in the community. The schedule is developed based on personal preferences, valued outcomes or life dreams, and assessment of needs created during semi-annual collaboration with the individual, the family and other service providers. Day habilitation services are offered in eastern and western Orange County as well as Greene County.
Orange County Express. People with developmental disabilities can enroll in Orange County Express to take advantage of transportation to recreational activities in the community on weekends and evenings. Events are scheduled with input from the participants and their families.
Service Coordination. Individuals with developmental disabilities can receive service coordination through Occupations, Inc. for case coordination, advocacy, linkage and additional support in collaboration with other service providers.
Employment and Vocational Rehabilitation Services. Career guidance and multiple employment services are available to people with disabilities and the economically disadvantaged to evaluate and prepare them for employment.
• Supported Employment - Participants can take advantage of supported employment opportunities – paid work opportunities in a variety of integrated settings at regular work sites throughout the community – and receive intensive support to ensure a successful outcome for both the employee and employer. Individual job training and job placement is available for a variety of high-demand career options, including food services, janitorial and building services, retail and clerical support.
• Industrial Work Centers - Occupations, Inc. also operates three manufacturing facilities that provide employment and training opportunities for people with disabilities. Vocational counselors assist each person in creating an individual rehabilitation plan focused on developing job skills and career goals. Prevocational services are also provided. On-going assessments, and training in work and social skills are provided to further enhance and prepare individuals for supported or integrated employment.
• School-to-Work Career Development Services - Occupations, Inc. works directly with area school districts to help students with special needs identify and pursue career goals. Job training, placement and coaching services help students achieve satisfaction and success. We provide individualized vocational planning, which includes exposure to world of work and different job possibilities.
• Janitorial / Pre-Supported Employment Training - Occupations, Inc. provides an innovative training program that supports and teaches individuals expertise in janitorial care. All participants receive formal training that includes a range of janitorial skills, the use of industrial equipment and service delivery.
• Enhanced Supported Employment - Occupations, Inc has developed a comprehensive, person-centered approach to employment services through an innovative Enhanced Supported Employment model. This model is designed to build services around individuals’ personal preferences, dreams, and needs in order to achieve and sustain meaningful employment for people with developmental disabilities. This program will include accessible and affordable transportation to work, supports both on the job and away from work, and sufficient training and work preparation. The program is individually designed to assist consumers in successfully gaining and maintaining meaningful employment.
• Strengthening Families Through Stronger Fathers – Occupations, Inc. provides person centered services to assist non custodial parents to obtain and maintain employment in order to provide for their children. This program is designed to enhance the lives of individuals and families by creating opportunities to develop skills and ensure new experiences and new choices.
